Final Project Evaluation

Over the course of this project I have learnt many skills surrounding water photography, some of which are practical like camera settings however sometimes water photography is about being in the right place at the right time or taking opportunities which come your way. Through my research alone I witnessed photos of destruction and agony and wondered how something as simple as water - comes in a bottle for 90p - could damage so much, mean so much but also help so much survive. Every living organism on the earth depends on water to survive and we often take the fact we have it for granted. As the only planet with water and living beings there is a lot to be said for the baths we fill to high, the taps we leave running and the oceans we pollute however this is just something overtime human kind will have to attempt to fix.
I have done a total of 10 shoots including my exam however this was not without a few bumps along the way, before this project I had never photographed water so was not expecting the challenge it actually was to take photographs of these droplets that were moving so fast. My favourite shoots so far have to be the food colouring and water shoot I did at the beginning of the project and the ice cubes and coloured water shoot I did for my exam. I loved these shoots and they really intrigued me in learning how to shoot water photography.
In the future I will definitely be continuing to study water as I want to expand my knowledge of high speed liquid photography but also landscape photography. Another area which intrigues me which I did not have the time or funds to explore this time round was underwater photography, I believe the beauty and the freedom of water can only be seen below the surface - as with most things.

Connecting Essay 5

I N T E R N E T   P H O T O

The first photo of Trafalgar Fountain is not a close up, the photographer has aimed to add depth to the photograph  by standing back on one of the raised concrete platforms. The fountain is in full spring as it often is in peak times during the summer, The sun light is reflecting off the water and the water is spraying out creating volume within the landmark.

My photograph of the fountain is more close up that the internet one however mine was taken at a quieter time which means the fountain is low and almost like an un-erupted volcano. However in my photo the lights shining in the fountain add to the drama. I chose to take the photo with the fountain directly in the centre as I believe believe this adds depth to the photograph.

The two photographs together could be two of a set as they are of the same subject however, they are different in their own ways. The lighting varies between the two and the fountain is certainly at different stages in both of the photographs. Over all I think to decipher these photos would not be easy.

Connecting Essay 4

I N T E R N E T   P H O T O

The first photograph is a very professional photo which captures all the waves of water and the droplets perfectly, the water is calm and is disappearing slowly down the plug hole. The reflection of each small wave of water with eachother is what really makes the photograph.  The tones of grey of the sink are reflected in the water and draw the viewers in to the brightness of the water which shines.

In my photograph I had the tap on full blast, I wanted the water to be rushing, I love the echoing waves of water where the stream is hitting the existing water and pushing it all back, the splash as the tap water hits the sink full effects the photograph along with the floating rose petals which lost control of themselves trying to escape the miniture waves. The water appears to echo itself. Ironically enough I added rose petals in as an experiment but the bouncing around in the water that they did created a flower shape with the waves and light reflections.

These photographs are similar in style however one is a chaotic battle for which bit of water goes down the plug hole first and the other is a calm descent to below. Each of the photographs uses different formal elements, the first one uses tone and mine uses reflection along with colour due to my rose petals.

Connecting Essay 3

 I N T E R N E T   P H O T O

The above photograph is through a rainy bus window and is of a London street, the outside is grey especially the sky and people can be seen walking around with umbrellas. Weather is often used as a representation of feelings or emotions and a London day like this could be seen as a dark moment however this rainy day is synonymous with Britain. The water blurs the outside and creates a distance from the weather showing that the photographer is sheltered from the elements. The photograph has depth to it as the road creates a path up the centre of the photograph even though the outside is blurred.

My photograph is clearly depicted from the outside, I decided that to photograph the rain I had to be out in the elements feeling the drops on me. I watched as tourists without umbrellas rushed to shelter under the awnings and covers outside the theatres in Piccadilly. I like this photograph and chose to capture this scene as I loved that across the road from me was a sea of umbrellas. Rain is often said to ruin days but sometimes the best moments are being caught in a storm. In my photograph there is the reflection from the scene above in the puddles and the people traipsing through them make this photo even better.

These two photographs are very different but very similar at the same time. The difference is one is taken from high up and features the rain drops on the window which creates a dramatic effect and one is a direct representation of what its like to spend time in these weather conditions. Both photographs contain formal elements such as reflection, depth and tone.

Connecting Essay 2

I N T E R N E T   P H O TO

The first photograph is an incredible work of art, the photo has been taken in a studio with blue food colouring being poured into a wine glass containing water. The syrupy colouring is creating beautiful bouncing shapes of colour on the clear back ground. This photograph contains multiple formal elements, the depth that is created by the colour against the light background is stunning. The way the food colouring has bounced in the water almost looks as if it is just blue smoke that has been sprayed into the glass.

My photograph is of a vase with blue food colouring poured into it. The food colouring creates cloudes of colour and the thickness of the liquid can be seen diluting as soon as it hits the water. The round nature of the vase and the shape of the neck forms the water into a specific shape. I like the way the water can be seen moving with the impact of the food colouring entering it, its like a small reaction that nobody can sense without the beauty of photographs.

Both of these photos depict the same thing however one is focused on the shapes created by the food colouring and one is focused on the effects on the water. I shot mine in location as I wanted natural light for my photographs, the first shot is taken in a studio location. In my photograph the food colouring creates clouds of colour once it hits the water in the vase where as the food colouring in the internet image depicts bouncy lines of colour that almost appear smoke like. Both photographs enhance the beauty of colour and water.
